History of Casablanca Airport

After Operation Torch in World War II, the United States constructed Casablanca Airport in early 1943. An additional airstrip, Berrechid Airfield, was maintained as a backup for Casablanca's primary airport, Anfa.

The airport served as a transit point for a wide variety of military traffic en route from Cairo to Dakar across North Africa to Port Lyautey Airfield and Marrakech Airport.

In addition, it served as the last stop for transatlantic flights that began in the Azores and ended in Nova Scotia or on the East Coast of the United States.

In addition to serving as a hub for logistics, the airfield also played a supporting role in the North African Campaign by housing the 68th Reconnaissance Group of the Twelfth Air Force, which flew photo-reconnaissance versions of the P-38 Lightning and P-51 Mustang.

At Angads Airport in Oujda in November 1942, members of the 68th Division landed. As soon as it was finished in March 1943, it was relocated to Berrechid.

The unit deployed to Massicault Airfield in Tunisia in early September after conducting anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic and photo-reconnaissance combat operations over German-held territory. The airfield was returned to civilian control when World War II ended in 1945.

During the early and mid-1950s, the airfield was reopened as Nouasseur Air Base and used as a staging facility for B-47 Stratojet bombers headed toward the Soviet Union as part of the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command. The Ben Guerir Air Base is now the location of these functions.

After American engagement in Lebanon in 1958, the government of Mohammed V demanded that US Air Force bases be removed from Morocco due to the political instability caused by the fall of the French authority in Morocco and the subsequent declaration of Moroccan independence that year.

In December 1959, the United States officially left Morocco after agreeing to withdraw. With the B-52s' extended range and the completion of Spanish bases in 1959, the United States no longer needed its Moroccan counterparts.
